Cylindrical Seals from the "Iranian Collection"

The work deals with 74 samples of cylindrical seals from the "Iranian Collection" preserved at the Glyptic Fund of the S. Janashia State Museum. Our study is the first part of the catalogue, and for the present, we offered a description of the seals, we identified the material, we gave exact dimensions, and we determined their safety and state, adding appropriate photos.

Tetri Giorgi and Amiran represent idealizations of the male warrior, yet in many respects they could not be more different. In the following sections, I will discuss the representations of George and Amiran in medieval Georgian elite culture and vernacular religion, before returning to the debate over which of the two would be most suitable as a symbol of the newborn Georgian republic.
